1835 Constitution
Constitution was believed to have many problems wrong with it. So they all came together to change it. Votes of citizens depending on the east or west wasn't good anymore. The west soon gained more people. So the leaders from each side of the fall line came to represent their side and amend the Constitution. They made Nathanial Macon the chairman. And David Swain from the west and William Gaston from the east, to be the representers for their side. Representation wasn't quite fair on both sides of the fall line. The had to make fair across the state. After a long debate, the delegaters decided to compromise. Each would have at least one represenative, but the most populous counties would have multiple represenatives. The west having a higher population than the east, agreed. They saw it completely fair. For east, the west decided if a county was wealthier they get more senators. This balance was set for the east and west after the compromise. In 1776, it was allowed for free black men to vote. And they had been going to the polls. This was soon forbiddened in the 1835 amendment. Suffrage was also taken away from Native Americans such as the Lumbee. They also opened new spots for religious groups in political leaderships. The 1776 constitution only allowed Protestant Christians to hold office. Restrictions were removed off Catholics, but Jews and atheist were still denied. 2,327 easteners agreed with new constitution, while 3,280 did not. But since there was more westeners than easteners, the new constitution was approved.
